Sinn Féin TD for Cavan-Monaghan Pauline Tully has called for people affected by the rising cost of fuel and home heating to share their story.
The party has launched an online survey of people’s experiences of rising petrol, diesel and home heating oil costs.
Speaking today, Teachta Tully said:
“It’s clear to see that petrol and diesel prices are now totally out of control. They have gone up 70c a litre since January last year and the cost of home heating oil has doubled in price.
“On top of already unprecedented price increases, the invasion of Ukraine is causing fuel costs to spiral even further, as economic sanctions against Russia take hold. This rising cost of fuel will have a major impact on workers and families here in Cavan-Monaghan, who are already under major financial pressures.
“Rent, mortgages, childcare, food costs and transport costs in Ireland are already among the highest in Europe, due to the inaction of our out of touch government. This means that people here are already under huge financial pressure and the current crisis has only made this even worse at a time when people were already struggling to keep on top of their day to day bills.
“Despite this crisis, the government is failing to show the urgent action we need to give ordinary workers and families a break from these out of control costs. This is unacceptable. The government must act urgently to protect people from these spiralling costs.
“Sinn Féin have today launched a survey to hear people’s experiences of rising fuel costs. We want to hear from you about how this crisis is affecting you and your family. What are petrol and diesel prices like in your area? Are you feeling the pressure of price rises at the pumps? Are you concerned about turning your home heating oil on because you can no longer afford it? We want to tell the real story of this crisis and put it to the government.
“Sinn Féin will put ordinary workers and families first, to ensure they get the break they urgently need from these out of control costs.”
