Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Disability and Carers Pauline Tully TD extends her solidarity and best wishes to all family carers this Carers Week.
The Cavan-Monaghan TD said:
“The approximate 355,000 Family Carers in Ireland do highly-skilled, often exhausting work in caring for a loved one.
“They are health and social care workers who are a crucial and essential yet hidden pillar of care and support in Ireland, saving the state billions each and every year.
“During the Covid-19 restrictions Family Carers stepped up when services were shutting down.
“They continued to care for their loved ones around the clock to ensure they stayed at home and out of hospitals which were under enormous pressure from years of under resourcing that left them with insufficient capacity.
“As it is Carers Week I would like to reshare the recent Carers Charters that I, along with my colleagues in Sinn Féin David Cullinane and Claire Kerrane published in April this year.
“In consultation with Family Carers and representative organisations, this document examines and puts forward proposals to tackle three key areas of concern for Family Carers, linked to:
- Health Services and the Covid-19 vaccine rollout
- Social Protection supports
- Availability and accessibility of services”
